Raytown South High senior Ottis Peeler won the first place title in the 170-pound weight class at the Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) 3A Wrestling Championships held February 17 and 18.

Peeler, whose season record was 41-0 and who was ranked number one in the state all season, defeated number five state-ranked wrestler Drake Meine of Warrenton, number 2 state-ranked wrestler Joey Williams of Neosho, Aidan Morley of Ladue Horton Watkins, and Morgan Earl of Willard to earn the title of state champion.

“Ottis did everything to earn the state championship,” Wrestling Coach John Hatfield said. “He bought into the program and did everything the coaches asked of him and more. He did the morning runs, summer weightlifting, freestyle wrestling over the summer, and worked hard at practice. He is an excellent example of what hard work and dedication to the sport can really do for a person.”

Peeler’s teammate senior Emmanuel Childs took fourth place in the 285-pound weight class. Childs, whose season record was 36-14, defeated Joe Becker of Hillsboro, and number five state-ranked wrestler Cody Imbierowicz of St. Charles. Childs, then lost to Adrian Hitchcock of Neosho in the semifinal round, defeated number one state-ranked wrestler Bronnie Kinser of McDonald County in the consolation semifinal round, and lost to Corbin Lee of St. Mary’s in the third-place match.

Raytown South senior Lewis Caples qualified for the tournament in the 182-pound weight class.

The Cardinals finished 14th in the state tournament with 42.5 points overall.
